The Dot by Peter Reynolds

Have you ever read a children's book that you as an adult can relate to? The audience is way younger than you but through its lines you can find yourself. This is exactly what I felt whenever Dr. Giles read "The Dot" to our classroom. Throughout the book I could imagine my family, my nationality, and just everything that defines me. My parents have always taught me to leave my mark on anything and everything that I do because I do not know who I can help or influence with my work. They were not able to have a profession but they always believed that I would strive for higher and take advantage of all the opportunities that the United States can give me. I believe this is also something that this book tries to show us, Vashti's teacher believed in her and because she believed in her Vashti became a famous and talented artist. Before my grandfather passed away, he would always tell me that people will always remember your hard work and your kind words. I could imagine my grandfather telling me these things while listening to the book. This is why I decided to create a canvas with dots all over to include all the things that describe me and that have left a mark in my life. Some of the other things in my canvas are things that have helped me leave a mark on my friends or family members. For example, one of the blue dots have a F1 sign on it, this represents "Formula One." This is a sport that I have grown to like because I am able to watch it with my father and through this sport we can bond and spend some time together. It has left a mark in us because it actually brought us way closer than how we were before. In one of my dots, I have coffee. Apart from me loving coffee, it has helped me leave marks on my friends's hearts by being able to drink coffee while sharing the Word of God. That is the beauty of literature, it is able to reach any audience if you just have an open heart and if you are willing for it to speak to you. I dare you to leave a mark on someone's life today!
