Through the history of these parrots, the authors also told the history of the creation of Puerto Rico. At the end of the book, the authors talk about the efforts of the scientists of the Puerto Rican Parrot Recovery Program to keep the parrots from going into extinction, as they are very special for the upbringing of Puerto Rico.
Evaluation:
Appropriate grade levels for this book would be 3rd grade through 8th grade. I loved the vertical format of this book and the beautiful collages that tied up to the text of the book. The grade levels this book tries to reach out are a little older than what I would want to teach but I would definitely use this book for a history class whenever we are learning about Puerto Rico. The students can create a poster from the information of this book and any previous lectures I have taught about Puerto Rico.
